In August 2026, volunteers and voluntary organisations in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Tamil Nadu, organised a major relief-material collection drive to support people affected by heavy monsoon rains and flooding in Kerala. The initiative resulted in nearly 10 tonnes of essential relief materials being collected and transported from Trichy to Kerala.
Background of the relief effort
Heavy monsoon rainfall caused flooding and waterlogging in several parts of Kerala, with Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam among the areas reported as badly affected. Continuous rainfall also disrupted road connectivity and normal life in low-lying areas. More than 7,000 people were reportedly moved to relief camps according to volunteers involved in the Trichy relief initiative.
In response, volunteers and several organisations in Trichy came together to collect essential supplies for families affected by the floods and people staying in relief camps.
Essential items collected
The relief campaign focused on providing items that could immediately help displaced families. The materials included:
- Biscuits and other ready-to-eat food
- Sanitary napkins
- Diapers
- Nightwear
- New T-shirts and shorts for children
- Non-perishable food
- Bleaching powder
- Disinfectants
- Rice
- Green gram
- Wheat flour
- Rava
- Toor dal
- Chickpeas
- Sugar
- Cooking oil
- Chilli powder
- Turmeric powder
- Garam masala
- Sambar powder
- Coriander powder
- Mustard
- Coffee powder
Rice was collected in 5-kg packs, while cooking oil was supplied in one-litre packs, making the materials easier to distribute among affected families.
Collection centres in Trichy
Members of the public and organisations contributed supplies through several designated collection centres across the city. These included:
- Kauvery Hospital – Cantonment
- Kauvery Hospital – Thennur
- VDart office – Mannarpuram
- Kauvery Clinic – Ariyamangalam
- Aswin Sweets – Chatram Bus Stand
- Aswin Sweets – Kattur
- Aswin Sweets – Vayalur Road
- Aswin Sweets – KK Nagar
These collection points helped residents from different parts of Trichy participate in the relief campaign.
Role of volunteers
The relief effort was coordinated by social activist and environmentalist Manoj Dharmar, with volunteers and several organisations participating in the collection and packing process.
The initiative demonstrated how community organisations can quickly mobilise resources during a natural disaster. Instead of limiting assistance to financial contributions, residents were able to donate specific items that were immediately useful to people staying in relief camps.
Nearly 10 tonnes transported to Kerala
After the collection drive, volunteers packed nearly 10 tonnes of relief materials and loaded them into a van for transportation to Kerala.
The vehicle was flagged off by Tiruchirappalli District Revenue Officer (DRO) Balaji in the presence of volunteers and organisers. The supplies were then sent to Kerala for distribution among people affected by the floods and heavy rainfall.
Importance of the relief materials
The materials were particularly important for families who had been forced to leave their homes and move into relief camps. Food grains and grocery items could support families with daily cooking requirements, while hygiene products such as sanitary napkins and diapers addressed essential personal-care needs.
Bleaching powder and disinfectants were also included because flooding can leave stagnant water and create sanitation challenges in affected communities.
Trichy’s humanitarian response
The relief drive highlighted the community spirit of Tiruchirappalli residents. Individuals, hospitals, businesses, volunteers and voluntary organisations worked together to collect, organise and transport supplies.
The response demonstrates how a city outside the directly affected region can support disaster-hit communities through coordinated humanitarian assistance.
Significance for Kerala
The relief materials were sent at a time when thousands of people were dealing with the consequences of heavy rainfall and flooding. By sending essential food, hygiene and household supplies, the Trichy initiative provided practical support to families who had lost access to normal household facilities.
The effort also complemented the work of government agencies, local authorities and other relief organisations working in Kerala.
Significance for Tiruchirappalli
For Tiruchirappalli, the initiative represents an important example of community participation in disaster relief. The involvement of multiple collection centres across the city made it possible for people from different neighbourhoods to contribute.
It also demonstrated the value of cooperation between voluntary organisations, businesses, healthcare institutions, activists, local residents and district officials.
